Carl Bosch soon heard of Fritz Haber’s death. Before Haber died he wrote to Bosch, but Bosch never returned anything because he was too busy with everything happening in Germany. Bosch was on bad terms with the new government. Hitler couldn’t even stand being in the same room as Bosch because of the fight they had earlier. Bosch needed to get on good terms so he stopped saying how anti-Nazi he was and sent over a million marks to the Hitler fund. Even though Bosch was trying to get on Hitler’s good side he wouldn’t let them hurt his Jewish employees. There were many threats to Jews that the Nazis were gonna kill them. Bosch tried his best to protect them, but many Jews saw what was coming so they left Germany. Bosch tried to help employees that left by getting them new jobs in other countries too.
Bosch did stay focused on his project for synthetic gasoline even though all this was going on. Bosch’s team wrote up the Leuna Benzin (the gasoline their selling) pitch to try to get more government funding.
A Leuna Benzin Label
The deal was that the government would buy all the gas that Farben made, but Farben would have to triple the amount of gas made (making it about 1,000 tons of gasoline a day) and expand Leuna. Bosch must've been making a lot of money from this deal because he did a total flip-flop and said how great the Nazis were and how they were getting rid of communists, making more jobs, and lowering taxes.
When Haber died Germany didn’t really care. The German media made it look like he disgraced the German people when he left. The people that wanted to hold funerals or have ceremonies for him couldn’t because they were too afraid. Physicists Max von Laue and Max Planck didn’t care what the Nazis did. Laue gave a eulogy for Haber and Planck decided to have a anniversary memorial for Haber. Haber was one of the best chemists of all time and one of Planck's friends this is the least Planck could do for them. Planck even set it up to hurt the Nazis by giving a big celebration for a Jew a day before the anniversary of Hitler becoming chancellor. The Nazis decided to ban the event, but Planck just kept at it. When it came time for the event the men who were included in the ban couldn’t show up, but they sent their wives to show they cared about Haber. Other people who showed up were people who fought in the war with Haber, colleagues and friends of Haber, and Bosch showed up with a bunch of people from Farben. Bosch heard about Planck's ceremony and invited many scientists and engineers who worked at BASF with Haber. Some world famous scientists like otto Hahn and Planck himself gave speeches about Haber. After this event Bosch began doing speeches on how the Nazis were doing awful things and how he hated them. Bosch knew he was on thin ice with the Nazis. Hitler said that private companies that didn’t approve of his government were going to get wiped out. Bosch was getting so out of hand that Farben directors promoted him to head of the managing board. It gave him less influence so he wouldn’t ruin the Hitler deal. Bosch started to drink more and some said he did painkillers because he was depressed. It started to change when Bosch was offered head of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute when Max Planck retired. Bosch took the job because the institute didn’t like the Nazis ways. Before Bosch took office though the institute had succumb to the Nazis. At this point Farben had become a Nazi company and was supplying the military with fuel from the synthetic gasoline program. When the government wanted to go to war the went to Bosch and ask if the industry was ready for war. Bosch said to be honest no. He went to tell Hitler they weren’t ready, but no one would have a meeting with him. Hitler was about to invade Czechoslovakia. After this Bosch went into a deep depression. When Bosch went to a sanatorium right when he was feeling better Hitler had invaded Poland. Bosch fell into another deep depression contemplating suicide. Bosch went to alcohol and his doctors tried to help him, but at this time he had enough. Bosch then died. Before Bosch died he told his son what would happen that everything in Germany and Leuna his dream factory would be destroyed by a sky full of airplanes. The Nazis knew they had to keep Leuna up and running to be able to win. The other countries did too so they started to send attacks after attacks trying to destroy Leuna, but Leuna had even better defenses than Berlin no one could touch it. This was until one plane was able to drop a bomb that did kill some workers and hit Leuna and made it shut down for a little. Every attack Leuna would just be built back up very quickly a few other bombs did shut down Leuna for a little, but it just got repaired again. The Americans bombed it so much that it affected Hitler's fuel supply severely. Hitler was starting to lose the war because of the lack of fuel. At the end of the war Leuna could on produce fifteen percent of the fuel it made at the start of the war. If Leuna was destroyed completely at the start of the war it was estimated that the war would have lasted eight weeks.
